During the years we learned that a big portion of our customers was new to the terms that are used in the Ethiopian clothing filed. So we decided to create a dictionary that will help us to communicate with you better.
So Fasten your seatbelt cause we are starting now:-)

Menen(መነን) – the weaving of fine cotton threads which are used in the creation of Ethiopian dresses that are also known as Zuria- ዙሪያ

Neker(ንክር )- Menen- መነን that passed a process of weaving and after it went through a process of painting.

Saba(ሳባ)-Handmade weaving of non-cotton threads.

Zerzer–ዝርዝር Handmade very dedicated woven cotton threads. In the work process, several dense rows are created with spaces, creating transparency in the fabric.

Petel-ፈትል Thick cotton threads that are woven in very high density. The most common items made with this fabric are Gabi and Eterter.
In Axum you can find the best quality Gabi; the density is very high, the fabric is soft to the touch, airy and light. The one with the highest quality of Gabi types that you can find there is “sukarey”.

Shemanne-ሸማኔ The talented people that are in charge of the weaving.

Shema-ሽመና The name of the profession(like poet and poetry)

Telit(ጥለት)- The colorful part at the end of the cloth made of colored yarns which are woven with a mesmerizing work of art.

Teletafi– ተለጣፊThe colorful part in the cloth that is handwoven.

Areb– አርብ One section of the Telit; you can see the sections in the connections that are made in the dress itself. Usually, when you want a regular dress, not as tight as most of the dresses, the process is made from 3 Areb and you can find it at the bottom of the fabric. Sharp- Usually it made from Menen with until 2-meter length with two Tel on both sides.

Netela-ነጠላ is a combination of two Sharpes. The creation of the Netela uniquely is with thread and needle connecting the two Sharpes and creating almost 4 meters of fabric. The netela has only two layers and is quite big. It’s white with a colorful border (tibeb) between 1 to 2 inches at each end with two variations, one has only one color and the second can have many colors and patterns.

Gabi– ጋቢ – Instead of just two layers like the netela, the gabi has four and it’s warmer and heavier, much like a light blanket.

Kochet–ቁጭት in the Ethiopian fabric, after finishing the weaving, there are edges, so that they won’t be pulled the wires are closed at the edges.

Embroidery– ጥልፍ is a handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn.

The difference between weaving to embroidery- All Ethiopians fabrics and the Telit are handmade. The weaving of the fabric is made by the Shemanne with loom and the embroidery is made with needle and thread or yarn.

**The process of embroidering is much longer. There are types of Telit that can take between two weeks per month and so the price is according to it. The looming work also can take two weeks depending on the type of Telit.
